Governors Island- “The Hills”

Governors Island- “The Hills”

Ferry rides are always fun and if a blue sky and a gentle breeze accompany the trip- it makes for a very complete moment. From Pier 6 in Brooklyn, you take a short ferry ride to Governors Island. (If you are coming from Manhattan, you can take the ferry at the Battery Maritime Building). The trip is short but there is something spectacular about it. You slowly leave Pier 6 and the vast views become clear. You have downtown NY on one side and a panoramic view of the new Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Once you get to Governors Island you are in for a surprise, or many surprises. The island is small, but NOT. You begin your walk and immediately are met with fantastic art. Sprawled along the grass grounds you see the work of Mark Handforth -Yankee Hanger Sculpture or the work of the current artists. Red adirondack chairs stand on the green grass serving as décor, but mostly to sit and absorb the generosity of the park and the strategic planning that took place in its revival. The island has been skillfully mapped- you have manicured lawns, winding paths framed by wild flowers, open eating areas, refreshing fountains, resting space with hammocks, bird houses, and the wonderful new “Hills” overlooking downtown NYC on one side and the glorious Lady Liberty on the other. After climbing large seawall blocks forming stairs, it inevitably feels like a triumph. Standing on the tallest part of the island, “Outlook Hill” gives you a grand sense of achievement and above all the feeling that you have discovered a secret place where you can be in awe of NY views.
